Tolkien Trivia

27-29 March 1939 Tolkien was in London for three days code and cipher training. He was at that time a professor at Oxford and was one of the hand picked individuals who the Government Code and Cypher School hoped might be suitable to jin the organisation in the event of war.

He is reported to have been "keen" to take part in such work but he was not selected.

The GCHQ website says that the reason for this is not known but the GCHQ puzzle book states that at the time the service was looking for mathematicians rather than linguists.
