Born on this day in 1918 – Joseph Allen Jr, Lights Out actor. Shown here with Judith Barrett, it was one of only two photographs I could find of him. The son of veteran stage actor Joseph Allen, Joseph Allen Jr. appeared with the South Shore Players of Long Island, NY, prior to entering films in 1937 under the name of Allen Brook. He was Joseph Allen Jr. from 1939 on, usually playing "the Other Man." Allen later appeared regularly on television.

Born on this day in 1930 – John Astin, actor who made appearances in Starship II: Rendezvous with Ramses, Homeboys from Outer Space, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Killer Tomatoes Strike Back!, They Came from Outer Space, The Return of the Killer Tomatoes!, Otherworld, and The Twilight Zone. He is probably best known for his role as Gomez in The Adams Family.



Born on this day in 1976 – Matt Doran, actor who has appeared in Star Wars II: The Attack of the Clones, Farscape, and The Matrix.

Doctor Who Trivia:

On this day in 2014 – Kate O’Mara, actress, died aged 74 she has appeared in Doctor Who, Doctor Who: Dimensions in Time, and The Horror of Frankenstein. In Doctor Who she played the Rani in the 1985 story The Mark of the Rani and in Time and the Rani. In 1993, O'Mara reprised the Rani for the charity special Dimensions in Time, and in 2000 she played the role again for the audio production, The Rani Reaps the Whirlwind.

On this day in 1985 the Daleks were seen to hover above the ground for the first time in Revelation of the Daleks.



On this day in 2005 it was announced that a second series has been commissioned and that Christopher Eccleston would be leaving the title role.

Born on this day in 1955 – Marina Sirtis, actress who has made appearances in Star Trek: TNG series & movies, Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Voyager, InAlienable, Stargate SG-1 , Earth: Final Conflict, and The Outer Limits. 



She is probably best known for playing Counselor Deanna Troi on Star Trek: The Next Generation. She later played the role in four Star Trek films, as well as episodes of Star Trek: Voyager and the series finale of Star Trek: Enterprise.

Born on this day in 1961 – Orla Brady, actor who has appeared in Doctor Who, Fringe, and The Deep. She played Tasha Lem in the Doctor Who television story The Time of the Doctor.

On this day in 1987 Patrick Troughton died at the age of 67 while attending the Magnum Opus II science fiction convention in Columbus Georgia, USA. He suffered a heart attack at 7:25 just after ordering breakfast. He died instantly. Troughton was cremated in the US and his ashes were returned to the UK where his wife scattered them benaeth a newly planted tree in his favourite Bushy Park, Teddington, London.

Tolkien Trivia

27-29 March 1939 Tolkien was in London for three days code and cipher training. He was at that time a professor at Oxford and was one of the hand picked individuals who the Government Code and Cypher School hoped might be suitable to jin the organisation in the event of war.

He is reported to have been "keen" to take part in such work but he was not selected.

The GCHQ website says that the reason for this is not known but the GCHQ puzzle book states that at the time the service was looking for mathematicians rather than linguists.

On this day in 1975 Davros the creator of the Daleks made his first appearance in the series.



Davros was first encountered in the Fourth Doctor story, Genesis of the Daleks, (played by Michael Wisher), He was the chief scientist of the Kaleds, a mutating race contaminated by nuclear and biological weapons. The evolved mutants were weak and crippled. His solution in order for them to survive was to remove all emotions and place them in a ‘Mark III travel machine’. He named these creatures Daleks, an anagram of Kaleds. Davros became obsessed with his creation, considering them to be the ultimate form of life, superior to all other forms.
