On this day in 1978 Eric Frank Russell, science fiction author died.


On this day in1987 it is announced – unofficially, that Sylvester McCoy has been cast as the next Doctor. The official announcement would be made on the following day.

Born on this day in 1918 – Theodore Sturgeon, science fiction author.


Born on this day in 1931 – Lawrence Montaigne, actor who made appearances in Star Trek, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and The Time Tunnel.


Montaigne played a Romulan Decius in Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Balance of Terror". He later played a Vulcan named Stonn in the episode "Amok Time".

On this day in 1960 – First Spaceship on Venus is released (In the USA it was released in 1962)

 

In Doctor Who on this day in 1972 the Sea Devils made their first appearance in the third serial of the ninth season, the series was entitled – The Sea Devils. The serial was broadcast in six weekly parts between 26th February and 1st April, 1972.

Born on this day in 1934 – Bernard Bresslaw, actor who has appeared in Krull and Doctor Who.



In Doctor Who Bresslaw played the Ice Warrior Varga in the story The Ice Warriors. He was considered for the part of the Monster in the 1957 film The Curse of Frankenstein but lost out on the part which went to Christopher Lee.

Born on this day in 1937 – Tom Courtenay, actor who played The Navigator in The Day the Fish Came Out.


Born on this day in 1964 – Lee Evans, actor who appeared in Doctor Who, and The Fifth Element.


In Doctor Who stand up comedian Evans played Professor Malcolm Taylor in the episode Planet of the Dead.


On this day in 2009 – Philip Jose Farmer, science fiction writer, died aged 91.

Born on this day in 1946 – Alan Rickman, actor, probably best known for his role as Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films, he has also appeared in Galaxy Quest and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.



Born on this day in 1955 – Kelsey Grammer, actor who appeared as Captain Morgan Bateson in the Star Trek: The Next Generation fifth season episode Cause and Effect (1992).
On this day in 1981 Geoffrey Beevers makes his debut appearance as the Master, at the end of the story he is replaced by Anthony Ainley, the fourth actor to play the Time Lord.

Born on this day in 1912 – Pierre Boulle, author of Planet of the Apes.


Born on this day in 1926 – Richard Matheson, sci-fi author/screenwriter. Among his contributions to the science fiction genre are - I Am Legend, The Twilight Zone, and The Outer Limits.

 

On this day in 1953 – George Pal’s movie adaptation of H. G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds premiered in Hollywood – it would not go on general release until the autumn. The War of the Worlds was the most successful science fiction film of the year.


Born on this day in 1954 – Anthony Stewart Head, actor who has appeared in Warehouse 13, Repo! The Genetic Opera, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Doctor Who.

Anthony Head, probably best known for his role as Rupert Giles in the US television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer has also been associated with Doctor Who. He was considered for he role of the Eighth Doctor and actually auditioned for the lead role in the 1996 TV movie.

Also he came top of a 2004 poll of fans who wanted him to play the Ninth Doctor.

He made his first appearance on Doctor Who as the Time Lord Valentine in a webcast story entitled Death comes to Time, and ater played Grayworm in the Excelis audio mini-series.

On television he played Brother Lassa in the episode School Reunion (2006). He was the voice of Baltazar in an animated serial – The Infinite Quest which was produced for Totally Doctor Who in 2007.

He was narrator for several Doctor Who documentaries including Regeneration, and the BBC Audio Project Who. He also narrated Doctor Who Confidential – Series Two.

In 1995 – John Howard, actor, died aged 81. He had made appearances in Destination Inner Space, Men into Space, The Unknown Terror, and Science Fiction Theatre.


In 2010 – Lionel Jeffries, actor, died aged 83. He had appeared in Lexx, First Men in the Moon, The Revenge of Frankenstein, and The Quatermass Experiment.



And in the horror genre:

On this day in 1968 - Hour of the Wolf released theatrically





On this day in 1970 - The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (L'uccello dalle piume di cristallo) released theatrically in Italy
